I was given three days to design an AI-powered finance app for a fintech client as a take-home assignment. I finished the full prototype in two.

The brief was broad: create an AI-powered experience that helps people make smarter decisions about their money. But the bigger problem was fragmentation. Savings, stocks, and ETFs often live across different apps, making it difficult to get a clear picture of how everything is performing together.

Rather than making the experience revolve around a chatbot, I made the portfolio the starting point. The home screen surfaces what matters most, with a subtle AI layer that reacts to what's happening in the portfolio. A top-performing stock or a diversification gap could become the next insight, and tapping it opens the AI conversation with that context already in place.

I used the same progressive disclosure pattern across asset classes, letting users pull up an AI-generated breakdown without having to type anything. I kept the interactions close to familiar iOS patterns too, which made the experience feel natural while keeping the prototype fast to build.

The main trade-off was manual asset addition. Real bank and brokerage integrations would have taken up most of the assignment dealing with authentication and APIs, so I chose to focus the time on solving the actual product problem. Users could add their holdings manually, giving me more room to explore the AI experience properly.

The brief asked for four or five screens. I ended up building a full prototype covering the portfolio, individual asset breakdowns, and the AI layer across the experience — all within two of the three days.

It was one of the take-home assignments I enjoyed building the most.
